About Eliot P Kaplan

Dr. Eliot P. Kaplan holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of New York, and is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS). He has been counseling adults, adolescents, and families for 20+ years.

Dr. Kaplan is the director of The Paradox Psychology Institute (www.ParadoxPsychology.com) and is a leading expert in the use of 'paradoxical interventions'. In regards to this approach, he lectures at professional conferences on the treatment of anger, impulse control issues, and other volatile behaviors. He is the author of a chapter in a professional volume series that addresses violent and anti-social behavior in adolescents.

In doing counseling, Dr. Kaplan has a relaxed style that encourages couples to be open about their issues. He is aware that very often it is a 'guy thing' for men to have difficulty expressing themselves. As a male clinician, he is able to relate to these concerns, while at the same time providing a comfortable environment so that they can 'speak and feel heard' (which is often their big worry!).

The advantage of 'paradoxical interventions' is that it is a non-confrontational approach that allows people to change rapidly by recognizing habitual behaviors and trigger situations. By recognizing the repetitive nature of various behaviors and conflicts, clients are able to undo destructive patterns. This type of change occurs easily and without the "struggle and work" many people often associate with counseling and therapy.

The primary focus of counseling is to enhance open and positive communication. This often means learning to 'read between the lines', and not get stuck in repetitive patterns of anger and hurt.

Treatment seeks to identify the couple's strengths in a way that allows them to resolve differences that promote conflict.
